Strumming Dynamics
Vary attack, muting, and ghost strums for feel and groove.
Objective
Strum a 4-bar pattern with three distinct dynamic levels (soft, medium, loud) and add ghost strums for groove.
Concepts
- ▸Dynamics: the variation in volume and intensity. Without dynamics, strumming is mechanical and lifeless.
- ▸Ghost strum: a strumming motion where the pick barely grazes the strings (or misses entirely), creating rhythmic movement without sound.
- ▸The down-up arm motion should be continuous — the pick decides what gets heard, the arm keeps the groove.
- ▸Accents: emphasize beats 2 and 4 (the backbeat) in pop/rock. This is what makes the groove feel good.
- ▸Strum angle: tilting the pick slightly (not perpendicular to strings) produces a smoother, less harsh stroke.
- ▸Brush vs dig: a light wrist brush sounds bright. Digging in with more pressure sounds heavier.
Diagram / Notation
Pattern with ghost strums (G = ghost, D = down, U = up):
Beats: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
D DU G DU DU
(full) (full+up ghost) (full+up)
Dynamic levels on G chord:
ppp (very soft): barely touch strings, fingertip grazing
mp (medium): normal strumming, relaxed
ff (loud): dig in, full arm weight
Accent pattern (> = accent):
Beats: 1 2 3 4

1.Volume control drill
- 1.Strum G chord. One bar at ppp (barely audible). One bar at mp. One bar at ff.
- 2.The transition between levels should be smooth, not sudden.
- 3.Record yourself. The levels should be clearly distinct on playback.
2.Ghost strum integration
- 1.Pattern: D D-U ghost-U D-U (beats 1 2& &3& 4&).
- 2.The ghost on the "3-and" keeps your arm moving without adding a chord hit.
- 3.If you stop the arm for the ghost, you will lose the groove. Keep it moving.
3.Backbeat emphasis
- 1.Strum 8 downstrokes on G at 100 BPM. Accent beats 2 and 4 by digging in.
- 2.Listen to whether the groove lands on the backbeat — this is what drummers do with the snare.
- 3.Now add upstrokes on the & counts. Keep accents on 2 and 4.
Tips
- 💡The groove lives in the upstrokes — most beginners have weak, sloppy upstrokes.
- 💡Your right arm is the metronome. Keep it swinging even through rests and ghost strums.
- 💡Listen to Ed Sheeran and John Mayer for modern pop strumming dynamics — both are rhythmically impeccable.
- 💡Record every practice session. Bad dynamics are almost invisible while playing but obvious on playback.
